Gobabeb, Research station in Namib Desert, Namibia
The Gobabeb Research Institute stands at the intersection of three distinct ecosystems: the Kuiseb River, Sand Dunes Sea, and gravel plains.
Founded in 1962 by Austrian entomologist Charles Koch, the station began as a South African Transvaal Museum initiative to study desert beetles.
The research center maintains connections with the ≠Aonin Nama pastoralists who have inhabited the Kuiseb River basin for generations.
The facility operates with 90 percent solar energy and welcomes researchers, students, and visitors who arrange their stays in advance.
The station's library contains over 19,000 journal publications, making it the largest collection of arid zone research in sub-Saharan Africa.
