Museum Swakopmund

Museum Swakopmund is a building near the lighthouse that houses collections focused on local natural history, rocks and minerals, and historical objects from different periods. Inside you will find fossils, geological samples, and artifacts that tell the story of the region and its people.

A dentist named Alfons Weber founded the museum after gathering objects over many years, and it officially opened in 1951. His personal collection formed the foundation for what the building displays today.

The displays show how the different groups living in Namibia have lived and what they valued, with objects from their daily lives on view. You can see the variety of traditions across the region and how people adapted to local conditions.

The museum opens daily and offers guided tours when you book ahead, with staff ready to answer questions about what you see. A shop at the entrance sells books, postcards, and handmade local crafts.

The museum preserves the original fixtures and furnishings from an old pharmacy that once operated in the town, offering a window into the past. It also holds an impressive collection of minerals from a major mining area that shaped the region's history.
