Cape Town Stadium, Multi-purpose sports venue in Green Point, Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue in Green Point, Cape Town. The glass and steel structure features a woven fiberglass exterior and sits between Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean.
Construction began in March 2007 and replaced the older Green Point Stadium that stood here since 1897. The new venue with roughly 58,000 seats opened for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Today the venue hosts professional football, rugby games, large concerts, and public gatherings that bring together people from across the city. This range of activities connects different communities and shows how sport and culture meet in modern South Africa.
Access is organized through numerous entry points distributed around the grounds, and multiple elevators help movement between levels. A pedestrian boulevard connects the site to the V&A Waterfront toward Granger Bay.
The outer coating of Teflon-covered fiberglass reflects light during evening hours through specialized lighting systems. This creates a glowing appearance visible from many points across the city.
