Green Point, Coastal neighborhood and gay village in Cape Town, South Africa
Green Point is a coastal neighborhood in Cape Town where Somerset Road serves as the main thoroughfare lined with restaurants, boutiques, and nightclubs facing the Atlantic Ocean. The district extends from this central area toward Signal Hill, combining residential buildings, shops, and entertainment venues throughout its streets.
The area was originally inhabited by Khoisan communities who used Green Point Common for livestock grazing before it came under Dutch control. The neighborhood's modern development accelerated in the 20th century, particularly after new infrastructure and commercial centers were established.
This neighborhood serves as a vibrant gathering place for the LGBTQ+ community, with restaurants, bars, and shops clustered around Somerset Road shaping daily life. The open and welcoming environment creates a space where diverse people come together and share public spaces.
The neighborhood is easily accessible by the MyCiTi bus system, which offers connections to Hout Bay, Sea Point, the V&A Waterfront, and downtown areas. The flat terrain and proximity to the waterfront make it simple to walk around and explore different parts of the district.
Cape Town Stadium was built in 2010 for the FIFA World Cup and replaced the older Green Point Stadium. The modern facility now serves as a distinctive landmark in the neighborhood and hosts various sporting and cultural events.
