Dune 45, Sand dune in Sossusvlei, Namibia
Dune 45 is a sand dune in the Sossusvlei area that rises approximately 170 meters above the surrounding desert. Its characteristic reddish-orange color comes from the high iron oxide content in the sand.
This dune formed over millions of years as sand was transported from the Kalahari Basin through the Orange River system. Wind action over long periods shaped the sand into its current form.
Photographers from around the world come here at sunrise and sunset to capture the light as it shifts across the sand. The dune has become a symbol of Namibia's desert landscape and draws visitors eager to experience the moment when sunlight transforms the slopes into warm orange and red tones.
The dune sits about 45 kilometers from Sesriem Gate and is reachable on a paved road with standard vehicles. The climb to the summit takes roughly an hour, and visitors should bring water and sun protection, especially if climbing during hot hours.
Winds from different directions shape this dune into a star formation, with ridges extending like rays from a central peak. This unusual structure makes it easy to spot and visually striking from above.
