Stellenbosch University, Public university in Stellenbosch, South Africa
Stellenbosch University is a public institution of higher learning in Stellenbosch Local Municipality, Western Cape, South Africa. The establishment operates across five separate sites and organizes itself into ten faculties housing a combined 139 departments for different fields of study.
The establishment began in 1866 as Stellenbosch Gymnasium, a higher school that grew into a college over the following decades. In 1918, the institution received full status as a university and is now recognized as the oldest of its kind in the country.
Students and teachers move through a campus where 19th-century buildings stand next to modern glass and concrete facilities. In lecture halls and cafés, you hear both Afrikaans and English spoken, with both languages used equally in daily academic life.
The main location sits roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of Cape Town and about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the international airport. The grounds hold 34 residential halls that provide accommodation for students who do not live nearby.
In 1999, the institution designed and launched SUNSAT, the first microsatellite built entirely on the African continent. The device orbited Earth for more than two years while collecting data on the ionosphere.
