Theewaterskloof Dam, Earth-fill dam near Villiersdorp, South Africa
Theewaterskloof Dam is an earth-fill structure near Villiersdorp with a wall rising 38 meters and extending 646 meters across the valley. The reservoir created behind it covers an expanse of open water surrounded by rolling hills and scrubland.
The dam was constructed in 1978 and became the primary water storage facility for the Western Cape region. It developed into essential infrastructure serving the greater Cape Town area and surrounding communities.
The dam grounds host the Synergy Live music festival every November, drawing South African performers and music fans to the site. Visitors experience live shows in a setting shaped by the water and surrounding landscape.
Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy views of the water from various vantage points along the dam structure. Water levels vary seasonally, so the appearance of the landscape changes throughout the year depending on rainfall patterns.
During dry periods, dropping water levels reveal tree tops emerging from the surface, creating an unusual landscape across the expansive reservoir. These ghostly remains serve as reminders of the land that was flooded when the dam was filled.
