Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, Nuclear power plant in Western Cape, South Africa
Koeberg Nuclear Power Station is a power-generating facility located on South Africa's southwestern coast south of Cape Town. The two reactor units work together to produce about 1800 megawatts of electricity for the national grid.
Construction of the facility began in 1976, with the first reactor connecting to the grid in 1984 and the second in 1985. South Africa's state-owned power company Eskom has managed its operations since its inception.
The site maintains a nature reserve where local wildlife and bird species thrive alongside the facility's operations. Visitors can walk through these protected areas and observe native fauna in their natural habitat.
Access to the site is generally restricted for security reasons, though scheduled educational tours or visitor programs may be available upon request. Any visit will require prior arrangement with the facility's management.
This is the only nuclear power facility on the entire African continent, making it a singular energy source for the region. Its presence reflects South Africa's distinct technological path in power generation compared to neighboring nations.
