Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve

Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve is a large protected area in the Northern Cape featuring deep gorges, natural pools, and waterfalls fed by streams flowing through the landscape. The reserve offers hiking trails of varying difficulty, from shorter day walks to longer multi-day routes where hikers can rest in basic cabins.

The reserve's name comes from a 1739 conflict between Khoi people and settlers fighting over livestock and territory. This clash shaped the early history of the region and remains embedded in the land's identity.

The caves throughout this reserve hold rock art created by people who lived here long ago, offering glimpses into their daily lives and beliefs. Walking through these spaces, you can sense the connection between the landscape and those who once sheltered here.

The reserve suits hikers of different skill levels, from short walks to longer expeditions that require good fitness. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the terrain is exposed and the sun can be intense.

This reserve shelters over 1,350 plant species, including the rare wagon tree and various wildflowers from multiple ecosystems. This exceptional diversity emerges where the dry Karoo landscape meets the lusher Fynbos region.
