Cederberg Wilderness Area, Nature reserve in Western Cape, South Africa

The Cederberg Mountains contain orange-colored sandstone formations, including the Maltese Cross and Wolfberg Arch, rising from the landscape at elevations above 1000 meters.

The area received official wilderness status in 1973, encompassing 66,811 hectares of protected terrain within the Cape Floral Region, three hours from Cape Town.

Ancient rock art sites throughout the wilderness display paintings created by San and Khoi people, with some artworks dating between 300 and 6000 years old.

Visitors require permits to access hiking trails, which are organized into three zones with daily hiker limits to maintain environmental preservation standards.

The endangered Clanwilliam cedar trees grow exclusively on these mountain cliffs, leading to the establishment of a dedicated 5,250-hectare cedar reserve in 1987.

South Africa in full scale: from cities to wild trails

From the windy tip of the Cape to the blue line of the Drakensberg, South Africa stacks landscapes that do not resemble each other. A morning on Table Mountain, an evening facing the whales of Hermanus, and between them red trails, deep canyons, lagoons, vineyards, and reserves where large animals pass through. Kruger opens its roads at dawn, Pilanesberg sketches an ancient crater, iSimangaliso blends reefs and wetlands. Further afield, the rugged coast preserves its cliffs, the Richtersveld its succulent deserts, and the Valley of Desolation its frozen lava columns. Here, travel is at eye and light level, to the rhythm of a vast land that changes its face at every turn.
