National Museum, Bloemfontein

The National Museum spans multiple buildings containing exhibits of natural sciences, cultural history, and South African art collections spanning several centuries.

Established in 1877 in the old Raadsaal building, the museum received its first permanent director, Dr E.C.N. van Hoepen, in January 1922.

The museum features exhibits on indigenous cultures, including detailed displays of Bushmen heritage and reconstructions of Victorian-era Bloemfontein street scenes.

Located at 36 Aliwal Street, the museum operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 17:00, with modified hours during weekends and public holidays.

The museum houses the Florisbad skull, a human ancestor fossil discovered in the 1930s, along with a complete skeleton of Euskelosaurus.
