Laohu Valley Reserve, Wildlife conservation area in Free State and Northern Cape, South Africa
The reserve extends across 350 square kilometers of land, incorporating sections on both sides of the Orange River near Vanderkloof Dam.
The reserve emerged in 2002 through the transformation of 17 former sheep farms into a protected area for wildlife conservation.
The name Laohu originates from Chinese language, reflecting the reserve's connection to international tiger conservation initiatives.
The reserve receives 400 millimeters of annual rainfall, with thunderstorms occurring between January and April, and temperatures ranging from cold winters to hot summers.
Twenty South China tigers inhabit the reserve, representing one-fifth of the global population of this critically endangered subspecies.
