Bloemfontein City Hall, Municipal government building in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
Bloemfontein City Hall is a double-storey sandstone structure with two towers flanking the main entrance on President Brand Street. The building houses multiple event halls, including a main hall that holds 400 people and Clarendon Hall accommodating up to 300 guests.
The building was constructed between 1934 and 1936 under architect Gordon Leith's direction, reflecting the design traditions of that period. A fire in 2017 destroyed much of the municipal archive, resulting in significant loss of historical records.
The building functions as a gathering place for municipal meetings and public events that bring the city together. Its halls regularly host concerts and civic occasions where residents and visitors experience local governance in action.
The main entrance is located on President Brand Street, with an eastern entrance providing alternative access to the council chamber. It helps to check which halls are in use when planning a visit, as different areas serve different purposes and may have varying accessibility.
The western entrance of Clarendon Hall features two granite bowls that mirror design elements found at the Viceroy's House in New Delhi, India. This architectural connection links the South African building to colonial-era design traditions from across the British Commonwealth.
