Botshabelo, Free State, Township in Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, South Africa.
Botshabelo is a township in Free State province, located approximately 50 kilometers east of Bloemfontein. It sprawls across a large area and houses around 140 functioning factories, primarily in textile manufacturing.
The township was established in 1978 during the Apartheid era, growing out of the Kromdraai camp. It became South Africa's second largest township after Soweto.
The name Botshabelo comes from Sesotho and means 'refuge', reflecting its role as a settlement for Basotho and Xhosa communities. Visitors can experience this cultural identity through local traditions and the way the community is organized.
The township is accessible by main roads connecting to surrounding areas. Visitors should be aware of local conditions and gather information before their visit.
The Rustfontein Dam and a nature reserve border the southwest side of the township, providing natural spaces within the urban development. This water body and the surrounding landscape serve as an important gathering place for residents and visitors.
