Welkom, Gold mining town in Free State, South Africa.
Welkom is a town in Matjhabeng Local Municipality within the Free State province of South Africa. The streets are arranged with dozens of traffic circles, which replace conventional intersections with signals.
Gold deposits were found in 1939, leading to the founding of this settlement in 1947. City status was granted in 1968 after two decades of rapid growth.
The name comes from the Dutch word for "welcome", reflecting the intentions of early mining companies to attract workers. Neighborhoods are divided into numbered sections that correspond to specific mining shafts developed at different times.
The elevation of 1333 meters (about 4370 feet) brings mild temperatures and dry air, especially during winter months. Visitors should note the numerous traffic circles, which help with orientation when moving through the town.
A strong tornado hit the town in March 1990, causing major damage to buildings and infrastructure. This weather event remains one of the most severe natural occurrences in South African history.
