Weenen Game Reserve, Nature reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Weenen Game Reserve is a protected area in KwaZulu-Natal covering land with acacia savanna, grasslands, thickets, and waterholes scattered throughout. The varied terrain supports a range of wildlife species and bird populations across the reserve.
This former farming land was established as a protected area in 1948 to stop severe soil erosion caused by agricultural use. The conversion allowed the landscape to recover and return to its natural state.
The reserve functions as an educational center where visitors learn about South African wildlife conservation through guided walks and environmental programs.
The reserve has roads you can drive on, spots to watch wildlife at waterholes, and areas for picnicking throughout the day. You can stay overnight in cottages or choose to camp on the grounds.
Both black and white rhinoceros live here alongside many bird species numbering around 230. This combination of large animals and diverse birds makes for rich wildlife watching.
