Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve, Protected area near Ladysmith, South Africa
The 4,400-hectare reserve contains Spioenkop Dam on the Tugela River, surrounded by thorn savanna vegetation where zebras, rhinos, and giraffes roam.
The reserve includes the mountain where British and Boer forces clashed in January 1900 during a critical battle of the Second Boer War.
The land preserves both natural habitats and military sites, reflecting the intersection of South African environmental conservation and battlefield preservation.
Visitors access the reserve through the eastern entrance, 13 kilometers from Winterton off R600, with operating hours from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily.
The reserve features a specialized vulture hide where observers can watch these large birds in their natural environment without disturbing their behavior.
