Satyagraha House, Guest house and museum in Orchards, South Africa
Satyagraha House is a residence and museum in Johannesburg containing seven rooms spread across the original building, a separate cottage, and a contemporary addition completed in 2010. The spaces are arranged around garden areas that surround the property.
Hermann Kallenbach built this house in 1907 for Mohandas Gandhi, who stayed here from 1908 to 1909. During his time at the residence, Gandhi developed his philosophy of nonviolent resistance that would later influence movements around the world.
The house reflects a blend of South African and Indian architectural styles that visitors can observe throughout the rooms and gardens. This mixing of styles tells the story of the exchange of ideas that took place within these walls.
The property is located in Johannesburg and accessible by car, with parking available for visitors on the grounds. Staff members offer vegetarian meals and meditation sessions as part of the visit experience.
The loft where Gandhi slept, prayed, and wrote remains open to visitors and keeps its original appearance from the early 1900s. This personal space offers an intimate look at daily life during that transformative period.
