Kosi Bay, Nature reserve and Ramsar site in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

The Kosi Bay system encompasses four interconnected lakes with channels flowing into the Indian Ocean through an estuary surrounded by coastal forests.

The area received international recognition as a Ramsar wetland site in 1991, marking its importance for water bird conservation and ecological preservation.

Local inhabitants maintain traditional fishing methods using woven fish traps in the estuary channels, passing this knowledge through generations.

Visitors require a 4x4 vehicle to access the reserve, with alternative parking available at KwaNgwanase for those driving standard vehicles.

The clear waters of Kosi Bay support both marine and freshwater fish species, while loggerhead turtles nest on its beaches from December to January.
