Kosi Bay, Nature reserve and Ramsar site in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Kosi Bay is a nature reserve and Ramsar site in KwaZulu-Natal with four interconnected lakes. These lakes are linked by channels that flow into the ocean and are surrounded by coastal forests.
The area gained international recognition as a Ramsar wetland in 1991 and received protected status. This designation highlighted its importance for bird populations and ecological conservation.
Local people here use traditional fishing methods with woven traps in the bay's channels. This knowledge has been passed down through generations and still shapes daily life on the water.
To explore the reserve, visitors need a four-wheel-drive vehicle for full access. Standard vehicles can park at KwaNgwanase, where the site can be reached on foot.
The clear waters support both freshwater and marine fish species living together in the same system. Sea turtles also return to nest on the beaches from December through January.
