Malolotja Nature Reserve, Highland nature reserve in northwest Eswatini.
Malolotja Nature Reserve is a protected area in northwest Eswatini set on mountainous terrain with dense forests, rolling hills, and the Malolotja Falls. The waterfall flows into the Nkomati River, creating distinctive landscapes shaped by different rock formations.
The rocks in the reserve formed about 3.5 billion years ago from ocean sediments that later transformed into shale and quartzite. This ancient geological history still shapes the appearance and structure of the landscape today.
The name comes from the Swazi language and reflects the regional landscape and natural features. Workshops near the entrance display traditional stone carving crafts that local artisans still create and sell today.
Visitors can use several accommodation options nearby, including camping sites and self-catering log cabins. Access to traditional beehive chalets at Hawane is also available, offering different experiences for guests.
The reserve is home to the endangered blue swallow and contains two rare cycad species that grow on the valley floors. These special plants and birds make the region important for protecting rare species.
