Nzhelele Dam, Arch dam in Musina, South Africa
The Nzhelele Dam is an arch dam that spans across the Nzhelele River with a height of 47 meters. It holds a large reservoir that provides water for irrigation purposes in the region.
The dam was built in 1948 by the Department of Water Affairs to support agricultural development in Limpopo Province. Since then it has played a key role in supplying water for irrigation projects across the region.
The name Nzhelele comes from local languages and refers to falcons and eagles that once followed elephant hunters through the surrounding valleys. This connection to wildlife remains part of the region's identity today.
The site is located at an elevation of about 627 meters and is accessible by car. Visitors should keep in mind that the area is rural and local infrastructure may be limited.
The dam is part of plans to support a special economic zone between Musina and Makhado. This economic initiative connects the region to modern development projects.
