Ruzizi III Hydroelectric Power Station, Hydroelectric power station in Rusizi District, Rwanda
Ruzizi III is a hydroelectric power station located on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It uses three Francis turbines to generate electricity from the river waters.
The project began in 2016 with financial backing from international institutions including the World Bank and European Union. It was developed as part of regional cooperation efforts to address energy needs in the Great Lakes area.
The power station represents a collaboration between Rwanda, Burundi, and Democratic Republic of Congo through the Economic Community of the Great Lakes Countries.
The site is located at a border crossing and connects to existing power networks in the region. Access may be restricted due to the border location, and special permits may be required to visit the area.
The project includes a 2.28-kilometer-long headrace tunnel that carries water to the turbines. This underground construction allows efficient power generation across the challenging mountainous border region.
