Goma, Administrative center in North Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Goma is a city on the northern shore of Lake Kivu in North Kivu Province, directly at the border with Rwanda and close to the active volcanoes of the Virunga range. The streets run along the shoreline while residential areas spread up the slopes, offering views of the lake and neighboring hills.
The city emerged in the early years of the 20th century as an administrative post during colonial times. The events of 1994 in Rwanda led to a sudden population increase that permanently changed the development and infrastructure of the region.
The Amani Festival brings together musicians and artists from different regions who use their performances to encourage exchange between communities. During this annual event, people from across the lake region meet to listen to music and experience local culture together.
Many international organizations maintain offices in the city and provide medical care, educational programs, and other services for residents and travelers. Those visiting the area should check with local contacts about current conditions and access options.
The Nyiragongo volcano, just a few kilometers away, erupted in 2002 and again in 2021, with lava flows reaching parts of the city and forcing thousands to flee. The cooled lava still shapes entire streets today and reminds residents and visitors of the immediate proximity to the geologically active ground.
