Mount Bisoke, Dormant volcano in Virunga Mountains, Rwanda
> Mount Bisoke is a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains that reaches 3711 meters above sea level. Its slopes are covered with rainforest and alpine meadows, with a crater lake sitting at the summit.
The volcano experienced two major eruptions, in 1891 and 1957. The second event created two smaller cones on the mountain's northern flank.

Visitors can reach the mountain through two hiking trails. The main route takes about six hours round trip, and permits are required.
The mountain's slopes once held the Karisoke Research Center, where researcher Dian Fossey studied endangered mountain gorillas. This location remains a significant part of the region's wildlife research history.
