Mount Gahinga, Dormant volcano in Virunga Mountains, Rwanda
Mount Gahinga rises 3,474 meters above sea level, featuring a swampy caldera measuring 180 meters wide at its summit point.
The name derives from Kinyarwanda dialect meaning 'small pile of stones', referencing the geological formations found throughout the mountain.
The mountain slopes contain bamboo forests that provide essential habitat for endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkey populations.
Hiking permits require visitors to be at least 15 years old, with group sizes limited to twelve people per registration.
The summit contains a shallow crater swamp populated by sub-alpine plants including lobelia and senecio species.
