Mount Gahinga

Mount Gahinga is a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains rising to a rocky summit above surrounding valleys. A waterlogged crater basin sits near the peak, filled with vegetation adapted to high altitudes.

The name originates from the Kinyarwanda language meaning 'small pile of stones', referring to rock formations visible on the slopes. This volcano formed as part of the larger Virunga volcanic system in the region.

The mountain slopes contain bamboo forests that provide essential habitat for endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkey populations.

Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring rain gear, as mountain weather changes quickly at higher elevations. The climb takes several hours and requires moderate physical fitness to reach the summit area.

The crater basin hosts unusual high-altitude plants like lobelia and senecio that thrive in harsh mountain conditions. These species exist in only a few African locations and make the summit botanically notable.
