Kitagata Hot Springs, Natural hot springs in Sheema District, Uganda
Kitagata Hot Springs consists of two adjacent thermal springs in Sheema District, created by volcanic heat rising from beneath the ground. The western spring reaches temperatures around 80 degrees Celsius, while both sources form distinct bathing zones for different groups.
The spring called Ekyomugabe served as a bathing site for the former kings of Ankole during their royal ceremonies. This connection to the region's monarchy shows how the springs were integrated into important customary practices long ago.
The second spring takes its name from Uganda's main hospital, Mulago, because locals believe its waters cure various ailments. Visitors and residents view the site as a place of healing rooted in long-standing traditions about the springs' therapeutic power.
The springs lie west of Mbarara and have separate bathing areas for men and women to ensure privacy for all visitors. Bring water-resistant clothing or a towel and check the temperature in different zones before entering, as the heat varies by location.
Different temperature zones in the springs allow visitors to cook eggs and prepare traditional millet porridge in the water itself. This everyday use of natural heat demonstrates how local people integrate the springs into their daily routines and food preparation.
