Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, Nature reserve near Kibale National Park, Uganda
Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a nature reserve near Kibale National Park featuring extensive papyrus swamps and dense vegetation. The area provides habitat for numerous bird species and several types of primates living in their natural environment.
The area was originally known as Magombe Swamp before conservation efforts began in 1990 to protect the wetland. Local environmental organizations took the lead in transforming it into a managed sanctuary.
Local guides from the surrounding communities share knowledge about plants used in traditional healing practices as they walk through the wetland. They explain how the wildlife depends on this landscape and what the area means to their families.
The best time to visit is early morning when wildlife is most active and lighting is best for observation. Comfortable walking shoes and binoculars are helpful for spotting birds and primates throughout the wetland.
Visitors can spot the Great Blue Turaco, a striking bird with bright blue feathers that is most visible during early morning hours. This species is uncommon elsewhere and draws bird watchers who come specifically to see it.
