Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve, Protected forest reserve in Bushenyi District, Uganda
Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve is a protected woodland area in Bushenyi District located at about 1,400 meters elevation. The forest contains hundreds of tree species and nearly as many bird species spread across its dense vegetation.
The forest came under management by the National Forestry Authority following forestry legislation passed in 2003. This administrative shift was part of a broader reorganization of forest reserves across the country.
Local communities gather medicinal plants here as part of long-standing healing practices and nature knowledge. This traditional relationship with the forest shapes how the place is used and valued by nearby inhabitants.
It is best visited early in the morning when wildlife is most active. Bring sturdy shoes and rain protection as mist and rainfall are common here.
The reserve houses a stable population of chimpanzees, with some individuals accustomed to human presence. These habituated animals allow visitors to observe the primates under relatively natural conditions.
