Kyambura Game Reserve

The Kyambura Game Reserve spans 156 square kilometers with a deep gorge reaching 100 meters, containing thirteen distinct habitats from savannah to rainforest.

The reserve transformed from a controlled hunting area in 1962 to a protected game reserve in 1965, requiring the removal of settlers during the 1990s.

Local inhabitants named the area Kyambura, meaning 'got lost' in Runyankole language, referring to people who disappeared during severe floods in the region.

Chimpanzee tracking excursions operate with an 80 percent sighting rate, requiring visitors to descend the escarpment and traverse dense vegetation.

The reserve contains three salty crater lakes that draw large groups of flamingos, a population feature not found elsewhere in Uganda.
