Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve

The Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve is a protected area that stretches between Lake Albert and the Rwenzori Mountains, containing diverse landscape types across its expanse. The terrain shifts between open woodlands, grasslands, dense palm forests, and river valleys that each support different plants and animals.

This reserve was established in the 1920s by British authorities and became one of the earliest protected areas in Uganda. It was created primarily to protect large populations of a specific antelope species found in the region.

Several communities live within and around this area, including farmers, pastoralists, and fishing groups whose daily activities reflect their connection to the land and water. Their traditional ways of living shape how the reserve is used and experienced today.

The area is home to a chimpanzee population that researchers study because these animals show unusual adaptability to their environment. These primates display behaviors that are rarely or never seen in other regions.
