The Old Cathedral of Quelimane features two domed bell towers and a pediment on its facade, with covered galleries along its sides.
Construction of the cathedral started in 1776 under Governor Baltasar Manuel Pereira do Lago and reached completion in 1786 under Governor António de Melo e Castro.
The cathedral's design draws inspiration from the Sé Cathedral in Goa, India, incorporating Mannerist and Indo-Portuguese architectural elements into its structure.
The cathedral stands at the southern end of Quelimane near the river banks, making it visible from multiple vantage points in the city.
Six nineteenth-century tombs remain within the cathedral walls, including the resting place of Captain Mor and several children from that period.
