Old Cathedral of Quelimane

The Old Cathedral of Quelimane is a colonial church building featuring two domed bell towers and a pediment across its front facade. Covered galleries run along both sides of the structure.

Construction began in 1776 under Governor Baltasar Manuel Pereira do Lago and was completed in 1786 under Governor António de Melo e Castro. The project marked an important building phase in the city's colonial development.

The cathedral reflects Portuguese colonial influence through its design, showing architectural details reminiscent of churches found in Goa. Visitors can observe the blend of European and local elements in the building's composition.

The building stands at the southern end of the city near the river, making it visible from many different points around town. This location makes it easy to use as a landmark while exploring the city center.

Six 19th-century tombs rest within the cathedral walls, including the burial place of Captain Mor and several children from that era. These burials offer insight into the lives of those who lived during that period.
