Mount Mabu

Mount Mabu is a forested mountain in northern Mozambique rising to about 1,700 meters and home to dense rainforest across its slopes. The forest covers thousands of hectares and contains one of the region's richest ecosystems.

During Mozambique's civil war from 1975 to 1992, the mountain's forest provided shelter for people fleeing the conflict. This role established it as a refuge that protected countless families during that difficult period.

Local communities view the mountain as home to their ancestors and live according to traditions deeply connected to the forest. The way people use the forest daily shows how closely their lives are tied to this place.

Access is challenging and requires good fitness plus preparation for tropical conditions like humidity and heat. Hiring a local guide beforehand is highly recommended to navigate safely and understand what to expect.

Scientists discovered animal species here found nowhere else on Earth, including pygmy chameleons and specialized beetles. These findings reveal how isolated this forest is and why protecting it matters for global biodiversity.
