Kapichira Falls, Natural waterfall on Shire River near Chikwawa, Malawi
The Kapichira Falls cascade down the Shire River, forming multiple tiers of water flows through rock formations in southern Malawi.
David Livingstone documented these falls during his 1859 expedition, naming them Murchison Cataracts after geologist Sir Roderick Murchison.
The falls hold significance for local communities as a source of hydroelectric power, supporting development and infrastructure in southern Malawi.
Visitors can reach the falls by following a 70-kilometer road southwest from Blantyre, with the Majete Wildlife Reserve located in proximity.
The waterfall supports a 128-megawatt hydroelectric station that generates power for over 86,000 homes through four separate turbine units.
