Nkhoma Mountain, Mountain summit near Nkhoma Mission Hospital, Lilongwe, Malawi
Nkhoma Mountain is a landform in central Malawi with two distinct peaks known as Nkhoma and Mbalambala, reaching approximately 1,772 meters above sea level. The formation rises prominently from the surrounding terrain in the region near Lilongwe.
During the 1800s, local populations used Mbalambala Peak as a defensive position against Arab and Yao groups involved in slave trading operations. The elevated location provided protection and allowed monitoring of surrounding territories.
The Chewa people named this formation Phiri La Mitu Iwiri, which translates to 'the two-headed mountain' in their native language.
The hiking trail to the summit spans about 6 kilometers and requires approximately four hours for a complete round trip, with roughly 600 meters of elevation gain. The terrain is steep, so visitors should wear appropriate footwear and bring sufficient water.
A natural water pool situated near the ridge allowed villagers to maintain extended stays and sustain defensive positions historically. This water source often proved crucial for survival during periods of conflict.
