Nkhotakota Game Reserve, Game reserve in central Malawi.
Nkhotakota Game Reserve is a large protected area in central Malawi with diverse landscapes including acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and wetland areas. The reserve borders Lake Malawi and provides habitat for elephants, antelopes, and other wildlife species.
The reserve came under major conservation efforts starting in 2015, which led to relocating more than 500 elephants from other parts of Malawi between 2016 and 2017. These actions significantly strengthened wildlife populations throughout the area.
Local communities work closely with park management and continue their traditional ways of living alongside the reserve. This partnership shapes how the landscape is used and brings economic benefits to people living nearby.
Visitors can arrange guided walking safaris, game drives, and bird watching excursions with knowledgeable guides throughout the year. The best time to see wildlife is from May to October when animals are easier to spot.
Three major rivers flow through the reserve from the Great Rift Valley escarpment down to Lake Malawi, each creating its own distinct ecosystem. This network of waterways supports an unusually high number of bird species found throughout the area.
