Kungoni Centre Of Culture And Art, Cultural and arts centre in Mtakataka, Malawi.
The centre comprises several buildings housing a museum, art gallery, carving workshops, and research facility in the Dedza region. The complex displays both traditional and contemporary art pieces created by resident and visiting artists.
Founded in 1976 by Father Claude Boucher as a training facility for local carvers, the centre later developed into an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional arts. Over the decades, it has grown to support artisans and document cultural knowledge.
The museum displays the traditions and rituals of the Chewa, Ngoni, and Yao communities through its collections. Visitors observe how these groups continue to pass down their craftsmanship and cultural practices in the workshops.
The centre is accessible by car, located roughly two hours from Lilongwe and three hours from Blantyre in central Malawi. Visitors should plan a daytime visit to see the workshops in operation and view the exhibitions.
More than 100 carvers work at the centre, and their creations have found their way into international collections and museums. Several pieces now reside in the Vatican Museum and Buckingham Palace.
