Michiru Forest Reserve

Michiru Forest Reserve is a protected mountainous area rising above Blantyre with steep wooded slopes and rocky outcrops. The terrain features winding paths through thick vegetation, and streams flow through valleys, creating pockets of open areas where wildlife gathers.

The reserve was established in 1970 to protect native plant and animal species of the mountain forest. Since then it has served as a refuge for wildlife threatened by development elsewhere.

Local people gather medicinal plants and herbs throughout the forest for their daily needs and healing practices. These activities connect residents to the land and remain central to their way of life.

Trails are steep and rough, so sturdy hiking boots and reasonable fitness are essential for exploring the reserve. Starting early and bringing plenty of water helps you handle the rugged terrain and changing weather.

The forest is home to blue monkeys and other primates that move through the canopy high above the ground. Bird watchers often spot rare species like the African paradise flycatcher among the branches.
