Lilongwe Nature Reserve, Nature reserve and forest in Lilongwe, Malawi.
Lilongwe Nature Reserve is a protected forest area in Malawi with elevated boardwalks and walking trails that follow the Lingadzi River. The 70-hectare site offers visitors chances to observe wildlife and move through natural habitats at a leisurely pace.
The wildlife centre at this location was established in 2007 through a partnership between the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust and Born Free Foundation. This collaboration created the foundation for the protected area that visitors explore today.
Local Malawian artists contribute to the reserve's character through wildlife sculptures made from recycled materials positioned throughout the walking paths.
The reserve opens daily in early morning and closes in early evening, making it accessible for a full day of walking. Proper footwear is recommended since the boardwalks and trails can become slippery during rainy conditions.
More than 200 bird species live within the grounds and use the river habitats for nesting and feeding. The site also functions as a rescue facility for injured and orphaned animals like vervet monkeys, small antelope, and bushpigs.
