Kasungu National Park, National park in Central Region, Malawi.
Kasungu National Park is a protected area in the Central Region with Miombo woodlands, grassy river channels, and rivers such as the Dwangwa and Lingadzi. The landscape spans approximately 2,316 square kilometers and provides varied habitats for wildlife.
The protected area was founded in 1970 as the main game reserve of Malawi's first president, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda. It was developed under his leadership to safeguard the region's natural wildlife.
The region contains prehistoric rock art and ancient iron-working sites that show how early people lived in Central Malawi long ago.
Lifupa Lodge is the only accommodation within the park and offers views over a dam where hippos and elephants gather regularly. Visitors should expect basic facilities and roads suitable for exploration.
In 2022, more than 260 elephants and hundreds of other animals were brought to the park in a major relocation effort to restore natural populations. This was one of the largest wildlife recovery programs in the region.
