Bingu National Stadium, National sports stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi.
Bingu National Stadium is a football and athletics stadium in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, built with a grass pitch and a running track. It has multiple tiers of seating and a capacity of around 41,000, making it the largest stadium in the country.
The stadium opened in 2017 as part of a large infrastructure project funded through international cooperation. It replaced older and smaller venues that could no longer meet the demands of national and international competition.
The stadium is named after former President Bingu wa Mutharika and is where the national football team plays its home matches. On match days, fans from across the country fill the stands, making it the most recognizable sports gathering point in Malawi.
The stadium is located in Lilongwe and can be reached by car or local transport without much difficulty. For major events, arriving early is a good idea since parking nearby fills up quickly and the area around the stadium gets very busy.
Although the stadium is mainly used for football, it also has a full athletics track, making it one of the few multi-sport venues in the region. This setup allows it to host track and field events at an international level, which is rare in central Africa.
