Maheswarnath Mandir, Hindu temple in Triolet, Mauritius.
The Maheswarnath Mandir is a Hindu temple in Triolet village with white exterior walls and several towers in Bengali architectural style. The building sits elevated on a platform and displays the structural features typical of religious buildings in this tradition.
Pandit Shri Sajeebunlall Ramsoondur founded this temple in 1888, making it one of the oldest Hindu religious structures on the island. The building marks an important moment in the religious history of the Indian community in Mauritius.
The interior follows a traditional Hindu layout with the main Shiva lingam positioned centrally and four smaller shrines arranged around it. This arrangement reflects how Hindu temples organize sacred spaces for worship and spiritual practice.
The temple is located near the center of Triolet village and remains open during daylight hours without entrance fees. Visitors have space to spend time in meditation and personal prayer within the grounds.
During construction in 1888, workers discovered a pot containing gold and silver coins from Indian Ocean pirates. This unexpected find helped finance the completion of the temple structure.
