Blue Penny Museum, Postal history museum at Caudan Waterfront, Port Louis, Mauritius
The Blue Penny Museum is a postal and maritime history museum at Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis, Mauritius. It displays historical maps, artwork, navigation instruments, and stamps across several rooms on two floors.
The museum was founded to house two rare stamps from 1847, bought in 1993 by a group of Mauritian companies. These stamps, known as the Blue Penny and the Red Penny, are among the first ever printed outside Britain.
The museum's name comes from one of the rarest stamps in the world, kept here in Port Louis. The broader collection shows how sea trade routes shaped the daily life and identity of Mauritius over centuries.
The museum sits inside Caudan Waterfront, a harbor area that is easy to reach by foot from the city center or by car with parking nearby. Plan enough time to go through all the rooms, and check in advance when the original stamps are on view, as they are not always accessible.
The two original 1847 stamps are kept in low-light conditions and shown only on specific days to protect them from light and humidity damage. On other days, high-quality reproductions are on display, made to closely resemble the originals.
