Amboni Caves, Limestone cave system in Tanga, Tanzania
The Amboni Caves form an extensive underground network spanning 234 square kilometers, with ten distinct chambers carved into limestone formations.
British colonial authorities designated the caves as a protected conservation area in 1922, following their acquisition by the Amboni Limited sisal company in 1892.
The Segeju, Sambaa, Bondei, and Digo ethnic groups use specific chambers within the caves for traditional prayers and spiritual ceremonies.
Visitors can explore one of the ten caves through guided tours, with the main passage extending 755 meters into the limestone complex.
Natural rock formations inside the caves create shapes resembling everyday objects, including a ship, a crocodile, and the map of Africa.
