Middleton Beach, Public beach in Albany, Australia
Middleton Beach is a public beach in Albany on the southwestern coast of Western Australia, stretching along King George Sound with white sand shores. The bay is protected by Michaelmas and Breaksea Islands, which create calm swimming conditions.
The beach was named after Captain Middleton in 1834 and served as an important supply landing site during Western Australia's early settlement period. The bay played a central role in transporting goods and people to growing settlements in the region.
The Noongar peoples, the traditional owners of this land, called this place Binalup, meaning the place of first light. The name reflects how the morning sunrises appear particularly striking from this location.
The beach has picnic areas, cafes, restaurants, and public restrooms available for all types of visitors. A shark protective barrier installed in 2016 provides extra security while swimming.
Between June and October, Southern Right and Humpback whales pass through King George Sound and can be spotted from the shore. This annual migration makes the beach a good place to watch whales during these months.
