Cowaramup Bombora, Ocean surf break in Margaret River region, Australia
Cowaramup Bombora is an ocean surf break west of Gracetown in the Margaret River region that forms over a submerged reef. The reef sits about 2 kilometers offshore and generates very large waves on the Indian Ocean.
This surf break gained international attention in 2007 when local surfer Damon Eastaugh won a Big Wave Award riding a massive wave. The award brought significant recognition to this remote and dangerous location.
The name blends the nearby town Cowaramup with 'bombora', a word from Aboriginal Australian languages meaning waves that break over shallow underwater areas. This reflects how the local community ties its identity to the ocean and the natural power of the coastline.
Reaching this break requires boat access from the coast, as it breaks far offshore in open water. Conditions here are rough and exposed to the ocean swells, so only experienced surfers with specialized equipment should attempt to ride here.
In June 2015, Felicity Palmateer became the first woman to successfully ride this legendary break. Her achievement marked a turning point in surfing history and showed that women could conquer even the most dangerous waves.
