Surfing locations in the Capes region of South West Western Australia

Surfing locations in the Capes region stretch along about 135 kilometers between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin with over 75 different breaks. These spots have varying wave patterns and intensities across the coastline.

Local surfers began documenting the waves in this region during the 1970s and mapping them carefully. This work resulted in the first comprehensive overview of all surf locations along the coast.

The Margaret River Pro brings surfers from around the world and has established this region as a major hub for the sport. The competition shapes coastal life today and draws visitors year after year.

The best time to surf is winter from June to August when consistent swells arrive. At the main spots, waves reach heights between 2 and 6 meters, making them suitable for different skill levels.

The Cowaramup Bombora is a special spot that generates waves up to 8 meters high under certain conditions. These large waves form when offshore winds align with deep-water swell patterns.
