HMAS Sydney, Warship in Australia

The HMAS Sydney was a light cruiser operated by the Royal Australian Navy, built in 1935. This 171-meter warship sank in 1941 and now rests on the seabed off Western Australia's coast.

The ship entered service in 1935 and gained notoriety in 1941 when it was sunk in battle with the German raider Kormoran. All 645 crew members aboard perished in this encounter.

The ship represents a place of remembrance for Australians, as it took hundreds of sailors with it. The story of its sinking continues to shape how people understand the war's human cost.

The wreck lies about 100 kilometers off the Western Australian coast and cannot be visited directly. Visitors can learn about the ship and its history through museums along the coast or online resources.

The wreck was not discovered until 2008, despite having sunk in 1941. This discovery finally allowed researchers to understand the exact circumstances of the sinking.
