The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Perth is an interwar church building with rendered cement walls and reinforced concrete construction. The roof is covered with corrugated iron and the structure stands on St Georges Terrace, a prominent city boulevard.
The community began in 1904 when followers from Sydney started gathering regularly to share their spiritual beliefs. The current building was completed in 1939 and has remained a lasting landmark of faith in Perth.
The building displays Art Deco features with smooth surfaces and geometric forms typical of the interwar period. The site attracts people interested in both architecture and spiritual practice.
The building is easy to find on St Georges Terrace in a busy part of the city and welcomes visitors. A reading room on nearby Hay Street offers additional space to explore the community's resources.
The site's gardens were redesigned in 1979 to save water, replacing lawn and ornamental trees with native plants. An old strawberry tree from earlier times survived this redesign and still stands today.
