Eba Island Conservation Park

Eba Island Conservation Park, Conservation park on Eba Island, South Australia.

Eba Island Conservation Park is a protected area on an island roughly 700 meters offshore from South Australia, rising about 19 meters above sea level. Limestone and calcarenite formations line the coastline, and at low tide a sandbar connects the island to the mainland.

The area was first designated as a Fauna Reserve in 1966 and became an official Conservation Park in 1972. This change reflected efforts to protect the island's 134 hectares of natural habitat for the long term.

The name Eba may come from a clerk in the South Australian Department of Lands or someone connected to Governor MacDonnell. This naming reflects the early European connections to the region.

Visitors can best explore the island at low tide when the sandbar is passable on foot and it is safer to navigate the rocky coastal areas. Sturdy footwear and caution around the rough surfaces are wise, as the limestone formations can be uneven and slippery.

The island bears traces of human use with old agricultural structures and fence lines still visible today. While these marks of the past remain, native plants are slowly reclaiming the once-cleared grassland areas.
